Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the Jagannath temple at Puri or the Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar (the Lingaraj can be seen from a viewing platform). Boat trips, safaris and entry fees are paid locally. Travel times are approximate.

Day 1 — Arrive in Bhubaneswar
Arrive at Bhubaneswar airport or railway station, where our representative meets you. In the afternoon, tour the temples of the "City of Temples": the 11th-century Lingaraj (seen from the viewing platform by non-Hindus), the Parasurameswara and Mukteswara, and the Rajarani with its graceful carved figures, then climb to the rock-cut Jain cells of Udayagiri (entry paid locally). Overnight stay in Bhubaneswar.

Day 2 — The Buddhist sites
A full day to Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri in the Jajpur hills (about 100 km each way) for the remains of their monasteries and stupas and the Ratnagiri museum (entry paid locally). Overnight stay in Bhubaneswar.

Day 3 — Bhubaneswar to Puri
After breakfast, continue to the coast at Puri, with two stops on the way: Dhauli, where Ashoka's rock edicts mark the end of his wars, and Pipili, a village of craftsmen stitching colourful appliqué. Evening on the beach. Overnight stay in Puri.

Day 4 — Jagannath and Raghurajpur
Rise early for darshan of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra at the 12th-century Shree Jagannath temple, one of the Char Dham (phones, cameras and leather are kept outside). In the afternoon, drive to Raghurajpur, where every house is a painter's studio for pattachitra and palm-leaf art, and return for a walk on the sands. Overnight stay in Puri.

Day 5 — Konark Sun Temple
After breakfast, head up the Marine Drive to Konark (about 35 km) and its Sun Temple, the "Black Pagoda" of old sailors, whose wheels double as sundials; the archaeological museum next door holds carvings from the temple (entry paid locally). Return by Chandrabhaga beach. Return to Puri. Overnight stay in Puri.

Day 6 — Puri to Bhubaneswar
Check out after breakfast and drive from Puri back to Bhubaneswar (about 60 km) for your train or flight. The tour ends here.
