Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the Jagannath temple at Puri or the Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar (the Lingaraj can be seen from a viewing platform). Boat trips, safaris and entry fees are paid locally. Travel times are approximate. Bhitarkanika closes for the crocodile breeding season, usually May to July.

Day 1 — Bhubaneswar to Puri
Arrive at Bhubaneswar airport or railway station, where our representative meets you. In the morning, see the old temple town of Bhubaneswar: the towering Lingaraj, the small, richly carved Mukteswara, often called the gem of Odisha architecture, and the red-sandstone Rajarani, followed by the hill caves cut for Jain monks at Udayagiri and Khandagiri (fees paid locally). Then continue to the coast at Puri, with two stops on the way: Dhauli, where Ashoka's rock edicts mark the end of his wars, and Pipili, a village of craftsmen stitching colourful appliqué. Overnight stay in Puri.

Day 2 — Jagannath and Raghurajpur
A morning at the Jagannath temple for darshan and the sight of the mahaprasad kitchens at work (no phones or leather inside), then the Gundicha temple at the end of the Rath Yatra road. After lunch, visit the heritage crafts village of Raghurajpur for pattachitra paintings. Evening by the sea. Overnight stay in Puri.

Day 3 — Konark Sun Temple
After breakfast, head up the Marine Drive to Konark (about 35 km) and its Sun Temple, the "Black Pagoda" of old sailors, whose wheels double as sundials; the archaeological museum next door holds carvings from the temple (entry paid locally). Return by Chandrabhaga beach. Return to Puri. Overnight stay in Puri.

Day 4 — Puri to Bhitarkanika
Drive to Khola jetty (about 200 km) and take the boat into Bhitarkanika National Park to Dangmal (boat and entry paid locally). Overnight stay at Dangmal or near the park.

Day 5 — Bhitarkanika creeks
Boats through the mangrove creeks for saltwater crocodiles, birds and deer, and the crocodile breeding centre. Overnight stay at Dangmal or near the park.

Return by boat and drive to Bhubaneswar. Overnight stay in Bhubaneswar.
