North Sikkim: Lachung, Yumthang and Gurudongmar Lake
North Sikkim is remote, high and spectacular. It rewards travellers who plan for long drives, simple stays and cold nights.
Lachung and Yumthang
From Gangtok, the drive to Lachung takes most of a day. The next morning you visit Yumthang Valley, the "valley of flowers", known for rhododendrons in spring, then return towards Gangtok. Our Darjeeling with Lachung and Gangtok tour includes this.
Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake
Gurudongmar is one of the highest lakes in India, reached from Lachen with a very early start. Because of the altitude, it is not suitable for everyone; talk to your doctor if you have heart or breathing conditions. Our Gangtok with Lachen and Lachung tour covers both valleys.
Permits
North Sikkim needs permits, arranged in Gangtok through registered operators, and the rules differ for Indian and foreign nationals. Roads can close after landslides or snow, so we keep a buffer day where possible.
Stays and comfort
Hotels in Lachung and Lachen are simple and can be cold; carry warm layers even in summer. Mobile networks are limited.
When to go
April to June for flowers, and October to November for clear skies. Winter brings heavy snow and closures at higher points.
