Kashmir by season: what each month is like
Kashmir changes completely through the year. The same Srinagar–Gulmarg–Pahalgam route feels like four different trips depending on when you go.
Spring (March to May): tulips and fresh green
Spring is when Srinagar is at its most colourful. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden usually blooms from late March into April, and the Mughal gardens (Nishat and Shalimar Bagh) come back to life. Days are pleasant; mornings and evenings are still cool.
In Gulmarg and Sonmarg, snow can linger into April, which gives you both snow and flowers in the same trip. Carry light woollens and a jacket.
Summer (June to August): meadows and long days
Summer is peak season. Pahalgam's valleys, Gulmarg's meadows and Sonmarg are green and open, and long daylight hours make day trips from Srinagar comfortable. It is also the busiest time, so hotels and houseboats fill early; book well ahead.
The Amarnath Yatra usually runs in July and August, which affects traffic around Pahalgam, Sonmarg and Baltal. Plan your sightseeing days around it.
Autumn (September to November): chinar gold
Autumn is many travellers' favourite. The chinar trees turn red and gold, skies are clear, and the crowds thin out after summer. It is ideal for photography and for a relaxed pace. Nights get cold by November, so pack warm layers.
Winter (December to February): snow
Winter is for snow lovers. Gulmarg becomes a ski destination and the Gondola rides over white slopes. Roads to Sonmarg and higher areas can close after heavy snowfall, so winter itineraries keep day trips flexible. Heavy woollens, thermals and waterproof boots are essential.
How many days you need
Four nights covers Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam comfortably, as in our Srinagar Gulmarg Pahalgam 4 nights / 5 days package. Five or six nights add Sonmarg without rushing, and a 7-night plan can continue to Katra for Mata Vaishno Devi.
How to reach Kashmir
Srinagar airport (SXR) has direct flights from Delhi and several other Indian cities, and almost every Kashmir itinerary starts and ends there. By rail, the network reaches Jammu and beyond; from Jammu, Srinagar is a long road journey through the mountains, so most visitors fly. If you plan to add Mata Vaishno Devi, a common route is to fly into Srinagar and leave from Jammu after Katra, as in our 7-night plan.
Month by month at a glance
- January–February: deep winter; snow in Gulmarg and often in Srinagar; some higher roads closed.
- March: the thaw begins; cold nights; the first blossoms in Srinagar.
- April: tulip season and spring gardens; snow still on the higher slopes.
- May: mild and fresh; meadows turning green; the start of the busy season.
- June–July: peak summer season; long days; the Amarnath Yatra begins around July.
- August: green valleys; occasional rain; yatra traffic on some routes.
- September–October: clear skies and autumn colour; one of the best times for photography.
- November: late autumn and cold nights; quieter hotels.
- December: winter arrives; the first snow in Gulmarg.
What to pack by season
- Spring (March–May): light woollens, a jacket, a rain layer and comfortable walking shoes.
- Summer (June–August): cotton clothes for the day, plus a fleece or jacket for evenings and for Gulmarg and Sonmarg; sunscreen and sunglasses.
- Autumn (September–November): layers: a warm sweater and a jacket for cool mornings and evenings.
- Winter (December–February): heavy winter wear, thermal layers, a down jacket, gloves, a cap and waterproof boots for snow.
Houseboat or hotel?
A night or two on a Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake houseboat is part of the Kashmir experience: carved wooden interiors, a shikara to the shore, and quiet mornings on the water. Many travellers combine one houseboat night with hotels for the rest of the trip. In winter, ask about heating before booking a houseboat; hotels are usually warmer.
Practical tips
- Mobile phones: prepaid SIMs from outside Jammu and Kashmir usually do not work there; postpaid connections generally do.
- Local rides: the Gulmarg Gondola, ponies and union taxis in Pahalgam are paid locally and are not part of package prices.
- Shopping: pashmina, papier-mâché, walnut-wood carvings, carpets, dry fruits and saffron; buy from government emporiums or trusted shops.
- Plan with buffers: weather can close high roads for a day, so keep your flight home in the afternoon or add a spare day.
Questions travellers ask
What is the best month to visit Kashmir?
April for tulips and spring colour, June for green meadows, October for autumn colour, and January for snow. There is no single best month; it depends on what you want to see.
Is Kashmir too cold in winter for families?
Not if you pack properly and keep the plan flexible. Hotels are heated, and a slower itinerary with Gulmarg snow days works well for families.
How many days do I need for Kashmir?
Four nights for Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam; five to six nights to add Sonmarg or go slower; and seven nights to add Mata Vaishno Devi.
Can I see snow in Kashmir in summer?
Usually yes, at higher points. In late spring and early summer there is often snow near the top of the Gulmarg Gondola and around Sonmarg's Thajiwas glacier, depending on the year.
