Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonmarg: which to choose
All three are beautiful, but they suit different travellers. If you only have time for one or two, this helps you choose.
Gulmarg: the Gondola and snow
About 56 km from Srinagar. Gulmarg is known for its meadow and the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world. In winter it is Kashmir's snow and ski centre. It works well as a day trip, or as an overnight stay if you want the Gondola early before crowds.
Pahalgam: river valleys and a slower pace
Pahalgam sits by the Lidder river, with side valleys such as Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari. It suits families and travellers who like walks and greenery. Because it is further (roughly a 186 km round trip from Srinagar), an overnight stay is more relaxed than a day trip.
Sonmarg: the glacier valley
Sonmarg, the "meadow of gold", is on the road towards Zoji La. From here, ponies go up to the Thajiwas glacier. It is usually done as a day trip from Srinagar (roughly a 196 km round trip). Heavy snow can close the road in winter.
Our suggestion
- First visit, 4 nights: Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
- Snow in winter: Gulmarg first.
- Summer with children: Pahalgam overnight, Gulmarg as a day trip.
- 5 nights or more: all three.
Local transport rules
In Pahalgam and at some points in Gulmarg and Sonmarg, sightseeing beyond the main town is by local union taxis or ponies, paid locally. Your package cab takes you to the town; the local rides are extra.
