Choosing a Maldives resort: seaplane, speedboat or local island
In the Maldives, how you reach your resort affects your budget, your arrival time and even which resort makes sense.
Speedboat resorts
Resorts close to Malé airport are reached by speedboat, usually in under an hour. You can arrive on almost any flight, and transfers are cheaper. They suit short stays.
Seaplane resorts
Resorts in the outer atolls are reached by seaplane, a beautiful flight over the lagoons. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so late-arriving flights may need a night near the airport. Seaplane transfers add significantly to the cost.
Domestic flight and boat
Some resorts are reached by a domestic flight followed by a boat. This can work at any time of day but adds a connection.
Local islands
Guesthouses on local islands are much cheaper and give you a feel for Maldivian life, but follow local customs: alcohol is not served, and modest dress applies outside designated beaches.
Meal plans and season
Resort food is expensive, so compare breakfast, half-board, full-board and all-inclusive plans. The dry season, roughly November to April, is the most popular. Most visitors, including Indian travellers, receive a free tourist visa on arrival with a confirmed booking; check current rules before you travel.
