Dubai desert safari and dhow cruise: what to expect
The desert safari and the dhow cruise are in almost every Dubai itinerary. Here is what the evenings actually look like.
Desert safari
Safaris usually start with a hotel pick-up in the afternoon. You drive into the desert by 4x4, with dune driving ("dune bashing"), a stop for sunset photos, and then a desert camp with a BBQ dinner, henna, camel rides and shows. You are back at the hotel late in the evening.
Who should skip dune bashing
Dune driving is bumpy. Pregnant travellers, people with back or neck problems, and very young children should ask for a gentle drive or go straight to the camp. Tell us in advance and we arrange it.
Dhow cruise
A dhow is a traditional wooden boat. Dinner cruises run in the evening on Dubai Creek or in Dubai Marina, with a buffet dinner and entertainment while the city lights pass by. Our packages include a dhow cruise with dinner.
What to wear
For the safari: comfortable clothes, closed shoes or sandals you do not mind filling with sand, and a light layer, because the desert gets cool after sunset in winter. For the cruise: smart-casual clothes.
