An Alleppey houseboat night: what to expect
A night on a Kerala houseboat is the highlight of most trips. Knowing how the day runs helps you enjoy it.
How the day runs
Houseboats usually board around midday. You cruise the backwaters through the afternoon, past paddy fields, villages and narrow canals, then moor for the night by early evening (boats stop cruising after dark). Check-out is usually the next morning after breakfast.
Meals on board
An overnight houseboat usually includes lunch, evening tea, dinner and breakfast, cooked on board in Kerala style: fish curry, appam, vegetable dishes and rice. Tell us about vegetarian, Jain or children's food needs in advance so the crew can prepare.
Rooms and categories
Houseboats range from one to several bedrooms. Categories differ mainly in air-conditioning hours, room size and the upper-deck sitting area. For families or groups, a private multi-room boat is more comfortable than sharing.
Day cruise or overnight?
A day cruise gives you a few hours on the water. The overnight stay is quieter and more relaxing, and you see the backwaters in the early morning. We recommend the overnight if your schedule allows.
Tips
- Carry mosquito repellent for the evening.
- Keep a small bag for the night; big suitcases take up cabin space.
- The air-conditioning may run only at night on some categories.
