Planning a holiday with senior citizens
A holiday with parents or grandparents is special. A few changes to a standard itinerary make it far more comfortable for them.
Slow the pace
Choose fewer stops and more nights in each. Avoid back-to-back long drives; break journeys of more than 6–7 hours, or fly where possible.
Hotels
Ask for rooms on lower floors or hotels with lifts, close to the main sights, and with a restaurant on site. Tell us about mobility needs so we can check with the hotel.
Pilgrimages
For Kedarnath, Yamunotri, Amarnath and Vaishno Devi, ponies, palkis and helicopter services reduce the walking. The Char Dham by helicopter is the most comfortable option for many elders.
Altitude and health
Talk to their doctor before trips to high places such as Ladakh, North Sikkim or the dhams. Carry regular medicines, and a letter from the doctor listing conditions and prescriptions. Travel insurance with good medical cover is essential.
Good first choices
Kerala, Shimla, Nainital, Darjeeling, Mysore and Ooty, Dubai and Singapore all have easy sightseeing and comfortable hotels.
