Where to travel in India, month by month
India has a good destination for every month. This quick guide matches the season to the trip.
January and February
Snow in Gulmarg, Manali and Auli; pleasant weather in Goa, Kerala and Rajasthan. A good time for beaches and the south.
March and April
Tulips in Srinagar; spring in Himachal and Uttarakhand; Darjeeling and Sikkim rhododendrons begin. The plains start to warm up.
May and June
Peak hill-station season: Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Darjeeling and Sikkim. The Char Dham Yatra opens, and Ladakh's season begins.
July and August
Monsoon over most of India. Ladakh is at its best, the Amarnath Yatra runs, and Kerala and Coorg are lush (with rain). Take care on hill roads in Uttarakhand and Himachal.
September and October
The monsoon retreats: clear mountain views, autumn in Kashmir, the Char Dham season's second peak, and clear skies in Darjeeling and Sikkim.
November and December
Goa, Kerala and the south come into season; Dubai and Singapore are pleasant; and the first snow arrives in the hills.
