Char Dham Yatra: registration, fitness and packing list
A little preparation before you leave makes the yatra safer and much more comfortable.
Registration
Pilgrims must register for the Char Dham Yatra with the Uttarakhand government, and registration is checked along the route. The process and requirements are set each season, so always use the official Uttarakhand registration portal and check the current rules. We help our travellers complete it.
Fitness
Yamunotri and Kedarnath involve long uphill treks at altitude. Start walking daily a few weeks before the trip, including stairs. If you have heart, lung, blood-pressure or diabetes conditions, see your doctor before booking.
Health on the way
- Walk slowly and rest often on the treks.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Carry your regular medicines, plus basics for headache, stomach upsets and motion sickness.
- Stop and seek help if you feel breathless at rest, dizzy or confused.
Packing list
- Warm jacket, thermals, cap and gloves: nights are cold even in May and June.
- Rain jacket or poncho, and a waterproof cover for your bag.
- Good walking shoes with grip, plus spare socks.
- Torch, power bank, sunglasses and sunscreen.
- ID card and registration details, printed and on your phone.
- A small day bag for the treks (pony handlers do not carry big luggage).
Money and network
ATMs and card payments are limited in the higher towns; carry enough cash for ponies, palkis and small expenses. Mobile networks are patchy beyond the main towns.
